Workshop Description/Overview:
In this workshop we will examine and unpack the 2016 MA STE content standards ESS3 / Earth’s Resources.
We will also explore curriculum resources for teachers in grades K-8.
Objectives:

Katie Clarke taught Engineering & Design at the Pollard Middle School in Needham for 10 years where she was also responsible for researching and writing the Engineering and Design curriculum for grades seven and eight. Prior to teaching E & D, Katie taught 8th grade science for eight years. She is a graduate of the LIFT2 (Leadership Initiatives for Teaching and Technology) Program, an innovative professional learning program for middle and high school science, technology, engineering and math teachers. Katie completed the TUFTS CEEO Engineering Program and The JASON Program for STEM Teaching. In 2008 she was awarded the Above and Beyond Award for Excellence in STEM Teaching by the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council.

- Observing and measuring substances to describe characteristic properties
- Experimenting to see if mixing substances creates a new substance

- Investigating forces between magnets
- Defining a design problem that can be solved using magnets

- Constructing an argument about the sun’s appearance
- Explaining Earth’s relationship to the sun, moon and stars
- Developing and using a model to explain the causes of lunar phases
- Analyzing rock layers and fossils to determine relatives ages
- Illustrating that the Earth and solar system are parts of the Milky Way
- Interpreting maps to provide evidence of Earth’s plate movement
- Using a model to explain the cycling of water on Earth
- Describing the locations and relative amounts of fresh and saltwater

- Investigating relationships involved in energy transfer
- Providing evidence linking changes in motion to energy transfer
- Modeling energy transfer mechanisms
- Relating kinetic and potential energy
- Explaining the relationship of an object’s speed to its energy
- Observing energy transfer
- Predicting changes in energy when objects collide
- Refining a device that converts motion into electrical, light, or sound energy
- Using a model to show wave patterns
- Describing how reflection of light allows objects to be seen
