ESL/Every Student Learns |
Dates: August 2 and August 3. New days added: July 26-27
Location: Douglas High School
Time: 8:00-2:30
Presenter: Coleen Thomas-DeBari (RETELL Trainer, ESL Teacher for 5-12 in MA, SEI Endorsed, English ceritified
Audience: This workshop is intended for MA teachers of grades K-12, technology specialists, curriculum specialists, guidance counselors, and specialists (arts, music, etc) with professional status). This course will fulfill the required 15 PDPs related to training in SEI or English as a Second Language necessary in order to apply for renewal of your professional teaching license in Massachusetts.
Overview: English language learners (ELLs) are an important focus of the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's (ESE) Proficiency Gap Task Force. Closing the proficiency gap depends on teachers/specialists having the skills and knowledge necessary to instruct ELLs effectively. Shletered English Immersion (SEI) is an approach to teaching academic content in English to ELLs. Generally, but not always, ELLs are in the same classrooms as native English-speaking students.
During this professional development experience, participants will review and explore teaching strategies/structures to support English language learners throughout their schooling experience. Participants will also explore technology resources that can support English language learners within the classroom and in their respective disciplines. You will also view educators in the state and throughout the country implement these strategies in their classroom environments.
To apply what you learn in the two days, you will complete a lesson plan outlining how you will incorporate various instructional practices that have been shown to be effective in supporting the learning of English language learners in your classrooms/educational environments.
Objectives: Day 1
Objectives: Day 2
Bring a current lesson plan and/or mentor text (textbook, picture book, word problem, lab experiment, any pamphlet/handout, etc) to both sessions to work with.
