Dates:
March 3, 4:30 opening
Description
This thought provoking 15-hour course is designed for Pre-K-12 educators and administrators working with English Learners and other culturally and linguistically diverse students. It covers three broad topics: Culturally Competent Teaching and Learning, Breaking Down Racial Inequities, and Striving for an Equitable Curriculum. Educators evaluate their own cultural competence, learn about common cultural differences, and explore ways to affirm students’ home cultures. They analyze real life case studies to put cultural competence theories into practice. Next, participants identify their own implicit biases and examine the impact of bias in schools, moving from the individual to the systemic level, on topics including microaggressions, the achievement gap, school discipline, and educational funding. Then educators explore the various forms of bias in instructional materials and how to overcome the bias. They work to find bias-free materials and overlay social justice standards to increase the equity in their own curriculum. For the final project, participants create an action plan to increase cultural competence and equity at the individual, classroom, and school or district level.
Instructional Format:
Live meeting on Wednesday, March 3rd, 4:30-5:30 PM via Zoom. The rest of the course is asynchronous on Google Classroom from March 3rd to April 29th with optional weekly discussions every Wednesday at 4:30. There are no assignments due the week of April vacation.
PDPs: This course meets the requirement for recertification of at least 15 professional development hours dedicated to Sheltered English Instruction (SEI).
Instructor: Karen Hall, M.Ed in English Language Learning, has facilitated this course for teachers and administrators in the Reading Public Schools, Melrose Public Schools, the Salem Collaborative, and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. She has taught in Massachusetts, Australia, and Thailand as a classroom teacher and ESL Teacher in grades K-8.
